Home Secretary Launches New Border Security Command

This will strengthen Britain's border security and bring down criminal smuggling networks that make millions on small boats.

The rapid recruitment of exceptional leaders who have worked in complex and challenging environments, such as senior positions in the police, intelligence or military, will begin tomorrow (Monday, July 8), with new hires expected to start their jobs in the coming weeks.

The Border Security Commander reports directly to the Minister of Home Affairs and provides strategic direction for the work of the inter-agency team, integrating the work of the National Crime Agency (NCA), intelligence agencies, police, Immigration Enforcement and Border Guard to more effectively secure the borders and tackle smuggling networks that facilitate the crossing of small boats.

Under the direction of the Home Secretary, a core team at the Home Office is establishing the new command’s powers, governance and strategic direction. Initial legislation is being prepared to introduce new counter-terrorism style powers and stronger measures to tackle organised immigration crime.

She has also commissioned the department and the NCA to undertake a bespoke investigation into the latest routes, methods and tactics used by smuggling gangs across Europe, which will feed into a major law enforcement operation in the coming months.

The BSC will be deploying significant additional resources to deploy more investigators, specialists and analysts to tackle organised immigration crime from Monday, many of whom will be deployed across Europe to work with Europol and European police to disrupt the activities of criminal smuggling networks and ensure that those profiting from human trafficking are brought to justice.

The Home Secretary called NCA Director-General Graeme Biggar to stress the need to disrupt the business model of criminal smuggling networks, their ability to communicate, move people across Europe and their drive for profit.

The Home Secretary will hold further calls this week with European Home Ministers and the Europol Secretary General to discuss strengthening security cooperation.

Border Security Command will make a significant difference to the UK’s law enforcement efforts to tackle organised immigration crime, dedicating significant resources to disrupting people trafficking networks across Europe and beyond, and working with European prosecutors to bring justice to those who commit crimes.

Efforts are underway to bring in a Border Security Commander to lead this effort, and we will begin recruiting additional personnel from the National Criminal Investigation Bureau immediately.
