Zhong Min-hao, a hanfu enthusiast from Taipei, has a dream to travel around mainland China wearing traditional Chinese clothing. A lover of Chinese culture and history, he says the clothes make him feel closer to history.

His journey with traditional Han ethnic outfits began seven years ago after he saw videos of people wearing hanfu on the internet. He used to own up to 100 hanfu outfits, but he has whittled them down to 30.

“Hanfu has cultural significance, it allows me to learn more about Chinese history and cultural heritage,” said Zhong, 33, adding that he enjoys studying the meaning of each pattern and the custom of wearing them.

His passion for hanfu led him to participate in the annual Taiwan Hanfu Festival in Hsimenting, a popular shopping district in Taipei, where enthusiasts from all over Taiwan converge to celebrate this cultural heritage.

“When I dress in hanfu, I go out with my chin up and chest out to look handsome and confident. This way, many people like to come and talk to me, and I often become an ambassador for our hanfu festival,” he said.

At the event, he posed with people to take photos and introduced them to different hanfu clothes.

The event has seen significant growth, from just over 100 participants in its first year to over 1,000 in its fourth year, reflecting the growing interest in hanfu in Taiwan.

“Taiwan's Han culture is deeply rooted. We speak Chinese, use Chinese characters, celebrate Chinese festivals, but we have not done enough to preserve and pass on our traditional clothing,” Zhong said.

“So I hope that by wearing it and going out, we can make more people realize that we are actually Han people and have our own traditional dress rich in culture,” he said.

Despite Taiwan's current de-Sinicization policy, Zhong said, “If one truly wants to explore the culture and history of one's own ethnic group, one will seek, explore and learn for oneself.

“I was very interested in China's history, culture and ancient buildings, but I could only learn about them in textbooks or pictures,” he said. He decided at school that he absolutely had to visit and experience these places when he grew up.

In 2019, he visited the mainland for the first time, discovering the old towns and streets of Shanghai. “I thought, ‘wow,’ I experienced something I can’t experience in Taiwan, all this old street atmosphere,” he recalls.

Zhong thought he had to come back and started planning. “I visit a city on the mainland every year, walk around and explore the city and see the historical places described in school textbooks.”

He said his life now resonates with the Chinese saying: “It is better to travel 10,000 miles than to read 10,000 books.”
