Google Pixel Watch 3 could feature key Apple Watch features

Overview Google may launch two variants of the Pixel Watch 3, one with LTE and one with Wi-Fi, in 41mm and 45mm sizes. Google is preparing to unveil the Pixel 9, Pixel Watch 3, and possibly other Google-branded devices at its “Made by Google” event on August 13th, earlier than usual. While we already know quite a bit about the new Pixel phones, leaks about the Pixel Watch 3 have focused exclusively on the larger model joining the lineup this year. With just over a month until Google's August 13th event, the Pixel Watch is due to go through the FCC, which could reveal some significant upgrades.

Four “wireless devices” from Google with FCC ID model numbers GBDU9, GRY0E, GG3HH, and GGE4J have passed FCC RF testing. Two variants support LTE connectivity while the others only support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Additionally, Google has submitted five straps for RF exposure testing, further confirming that the submitted devices are the company's upcoming smartwatch.

These four models further support previous leaks that suggest Google will release the Pixel Watch 3 this year in 41mm and 45mm sizes, which will not only have larger displays but also bigger batteries for longer runtime.

Droid-Life reviewed the FCC filing and found that all four models will feature ultra-wideband (UWB). The current Pixel Watch does not have UWB. The addition of UWB could open up new use cases, such as the Pixel Watch 3 automatically unlocking your car doors. Google is likely to show off more UWB-focused features for the Pixel Watch 3 at its event next month.

Even better, FCC documents suggest that Google's next smartwatch may support both 5GHz and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, which is unusual for a smartwatch. One document suggests that the Pixel Watch 3 may have Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) connectivity. There'll also be NFC for contactless mobile payments.

Leaked renders have already revealed the design of the Pixel Watch 3 and its XL sibling, which, if correct, suggests that Google won't be making any major design changes to its third-gen smartwatch lineup this year.

Instead, the company could focus on other usability improvements to improve the user experience.
