Studio gives Kentucky a taste of Hollywood
LEXINGTON, Ky. Lights, camera, action: A former Lexington movie theater seeks to strengthen Kentucky's role in the entertainment industry.
LEX Studios is the largest television and film production center in the Commonwealth, with a goal of attracting more Hollywood productions to Kentucky. It features more than 50,000 square feet of space.
As Studio Director at LEX Studios, Tim Sabo wears many hats.
“Receptionist, janitor, general contractor, chief electrician, stagehand and producer; it’s all of those things,” Sabo said.
LEX Studios has three studios, hair and makeup rooms and various offices. Sabo oversees efforts to attract productions to shoot in Kentucky and at LEX Studios.

He moved to the state from California with a long career in television production, including work on “The Biggest Loser.”
“I went out and looked at the environment,” Sabo said. “(The) incentive they have in place is incredible, and it seemed like a great opportunity to bring a lot of the production from Los Angeles to Kentucky.”
Kentucky is offering eligible production creators a 30 to 35 percent cash refund on certain expenses.
Misdee Wrigley Miller, owner of LEX Studios and its sister company Wrigley Media Groupsaid it was a competitive package and that bringing more production to Kentucky would create more jobs.
“Every name on that credit list represents a job, and it’s a job that a Kentuckian can do and a set of jobs that can be easily trained, from electricians to carpenters,” Miller said.

Miller added that the goal is to bring television series, game shows and movies to shoot in Lexington and other areas of Kentucky because it's a much-needed space that pairs well with Kentucky's natural scene.
“We already have some of the most beautiful outdoor locations and natural beauty in Kentucky,” Miller said.
It took four years to transform the former cinema into what Sabo and Miller describe as “a living set.” That means the entire building is equipped to be used for a stage.
“It’s great because it makes filming easier and it’s very cost-effective because they don’t have to move crews and costs are reduced,” Sabo said. “That’s one of the selling points of this facility.”
LEX Studios also plans to partner with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and offer certification and internship training opportunities.
