Maternity leave can now last 6 months, Jokowi gives this answer
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) hopes that the new regulation regarding maternity leave of up to 6 months will not be interpreted negatively. Given that some complain that this rule would harm productivity and force you to be selective when recruiting employees later.
“Yes, we hope it will not be like that, because whatever we do, we must respect women, pregnant mothers. We want all babies who are born to be healthy,” Jokowi said at Halim Perdanakusuma Airfield, Jakarta, Monday (8/7/2024).
According to Jokowi, the government is implementing policies to prepare mothers for the birth of their babies so that they can take care of them. The reason is purely humanitarian.
“So if you are given leave like this to prepare for childbirth and take care of the baby, I think it is very humane,” Jokowi said.
It is known that the government has enacted Law No. 4 of 2024 regarding the welfare of mothers and children (KIA) during the first thousand days of life phase (2/7/2024).
Under this regulation, mothers who give birth are entitled to leave of up to 6 months.
“Every working mother has the right to: a. maternity leave with the provisions of 1. a minimum of the first 3 (three) months; and 2. a maximum of the following 3 (three) months if there are special conditions proven by a medical certificate,” the content of the KIA law reads.
Entrepreneurs complain about this regulation because it affects productivity and disrupts entrepreneurs.
“The long vacation periods certainly make it difficult for entrepreneurs. Because we have to prepare replacements during long vacations, and this creates productivity problems,” explained Danang Girindrawardana, Apindo's vice president for public policy, citing detikcom, Sunday (7/7/2024).
DKI Jakarta Chamber of Commerce General Chairperson Diana Dewi expressed the same. “It is better if these issues are left to each company. The mechanism can be discussed internally and adjusted to the needs and parties with shared interest. I am sure that each company will have sound considerations on this,” Diana explained.
Apart from this, PHRI General Chairman Hariyadi Sukamdani also said that the long leave has created a vacancy. According to him, it is impossible for the company to have to wait 6 months for a vacancy to arise.
“His position will be replaced by someone else because it is impossible for the company to wait 6 months, so it is possible that he will enter and there will be no more seats,” Hariyadi told Detik.
This will therefore affect employee recruitment patterns, with companies being more inclined to select men.
