Pat Cummins calls for separate windows for IPL and Tests

According to Australian captain Pat Cummins, there is a need for a more specific time period for Tests so that players can plan their own schedule and preparation, especially for cricketers who want to play in franchise-based T20 leagues such as the IPL.

“Franchise cricket is more lucrative and attractive to some countries than international cricket,” Cummins was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald.
“If I was going to play franchise cricket I could probably be away for half or a third of the time we need for Australia.
“In Australia, Test cricket is from November to January and essentially no other cricket will get in the way of us playing Test cricket. If we can have specific windows for IPL but also Test windows, then that makes the decision-making a lot easier for the players,” Cummins said while speaking at the MCC World Cricket Connects 2024
at Lord's.
In 2025, Australia could play the final of the World Test Championship in June, immediately after the conclusion of the IPL, followed by the tour to the West Indies, which includes two Tests, three ODIs and as many T20Is.
In addition, Cricket Australia Chairman Mike Bird called for the sustainability of playing Test cricket.
“Do you have a smaller number of Test playing nations that are sustainable, rather than trying to maintain a system with additional costs that add to the economic challenges of maintaining Test cricket?” he asked.
Bird also asked for ideas that would be suitable enough to play the traditional format.
“We (Cricket Australia) don't believe we should dictate to any country what should happen, but we are open to ideas and proposals on how we can support Test matches.
“There is a summer to fill, and white-ball cricket can play a part, but (Test cricket) still remains the dominant sport in Australia. It is very clear that Australia will support, invest in and grow Test cricket opportunities for as long as we can,” Bird added.
