Nothing's CMF Phone 1 proves gadgets can still be fun

Taking apart a phone has never been so much fun.

This is a misleading statement. I don't take apart phones these days, but when the CMF Phone 1 arrived, it was the first thing I did because it's built differently. I don't think it'll be widely available in the US, but if you're willing, you can get it through Nothing's beta program for $199, which is very appealing.

CMF, Nothings' budget-conscious yet very style-driven sub-brand, is shipping its first phone, the aptly named Phone 1. The phone has the same name and operating system as Nothings' first self-branded phone, but it takes a new, modular approach to phone customization: Why put another case on your phone when you can put a whole new phone on it?

The concept is simple: you have a phone, but the back panel can be removed so you can swap it for a different one, and the replacement comes with everything you need to get started, including a custom tiny screwdriver, screws, and a color-matched SIM tray.

There's also a rounded accessory port cover on the bottom corner of the phone. It resembles the control dial on CMF's neckband earphones, but serves no functional purpose other than protecting the accessory port. At launch, CMF is offering three accessories — a strap, wallet, and kickstand — for $25 each, in an eye-catching orange color.

All of this is sold separately, along with the colorful replacement back panels, which are also $35 each. Inside the box, you'll find a very nice budget Android phone with a 6.7-inch OLED, a 50-megapixel rear camera, a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset, and a big 5,000mAh battery. It comes with a black panel installed, with orange, light green, and blue as other options.

Removing the back panel is easy, though as I learned, it does require a bit of force to break overly long nails. But that's probably for the best, since that panel sits between the insides of the phone and the rest of the outside world. Speaking of insides, it's very strange to see a modern phone so bare and exposed.

Just living in the moment, no back panel in sight.

Once your phone is safely encased again, you can add accessories. The wallet is actually two parts: a plastic panel with embedded magnets, like MagSafe, and the wallet itself. I don't think it's a coincidence that you can use this magnetic mount to attach your phone to a MagSafe charging stand (though the Phone 1 doesn't support wireless charging), or you can attach a kickstand or strap while using the wallet.

The strap is made from a thick woven fabric, and if you're a lot cooler and younger than me, you'll have no problem holding your phone on it. The kickstand seems sturdy enough, though it would be nice if the arm could tuck away from the phone when not in use. It's all bright orange, which I think is the gadget color of the year.

As a budget phone, there are of course some trade-offs to consider: there's no NFC, and the Phone 1 is only splash-proof. You also need to consider how the whole back of the phone comes off, which is understandable given the price. Carrier support is also pretty limited in the US; like the Phone 2A, it works on T-Mobile's 4G and 5G networks, but only supports Verizon and AT&T's 4G bands. But for $199, it might be worth it even if nothing else. It's a great accessory.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
