Lewis Hamilton claimed his first win in 945 days and extended his record by taking his ninth victory at the British Grand Prix on a wet, intense and emotional afternoon at Silverstone.

Lando Norris looked set to achieve his first domestic success but was beaten by McLaren in unpredictable weather conditions.

As the Northamptonshire track dried out after heavy rain, Hamilton, two seconds behind Norris, took to the pit lane to change from the intermediate tyres to the softs.

Norris was a further lap behind, and when he emerged from the pits after a slow 4.5-second pit stop, fellow Briton Hamilton took the lead to a roar from the sell-out crowd of 164,000.

Hamilton went back in time with 12 laps remaining to claim his first win since the penultimate round of the 2021 race in Saudi Arabia.

Max Verstappen took second, Norris third and pole position winner George Russell was forced to retire with a failure of his Mercedes' water system.
