2024 Olympics | Indian men's hockey team heads to Mike Horn's base in Switzerland ahead of Paris Games
Bengaluru: The Indian hockey team on Monday left for the home ground of famed adventurer Mike Horn in Switzerland, before embarking on a training camp in the Netherlands in preparation for the Paris Olympics.
The three-day, gruelling training camp in Switzerland is intended to build mental resilience. From there, the Indian team will travel to the Netherlands to play practice matches before finally travelling to the French capital.
Skipper Harmanpreet Singh said the upcoming experiences will ensure the players are “in the best mental and physical state before we embark on our Olympic journey.”
“We have just completed a gruelling two-week training camp in SAI Bengaluru and after a short detour to Switzerland with Mike Horn, who is known for his extreme adventures to overcome his fears, the team will play a series of practice matches against the Netherlands and Malaysia.”
After the final training block, India is expected to arrive in Paris on July 20.
“The team is in great spirits and looking forward to the final training block,” Harmanpreet said before boarding the boat.
India begins the Paris Olympics in Pool B, with a match against New Zealand on July 27, followed by a match against Argentina on July 29.
The Tokyo bronze medallists will next play Ireland and Belgium on 30 July and 1 August respectively, with their final group match against Australia on 2 August.
India must finish in the top four to progress to the knockout stages.
“The team has prepared well so far. We have identified the areas of improvement for the FIH Pro League 2023/24 phases in London and Antwerp and have been working on them at the training camp in SAI Bengaluru,” said India vice-captain Hardik Singh.
“The best teams in the world will be participating in the Paris Olympics in 2024, but this team is ready to seize the opportunity and bring glory to India. We are confident in our capabilities and excited about the journey ahead.”
