No signs of imminent eruption following earthquake near Kilauea: Kauai Now

There are no signs of an imminent eruption following a 4.1-magnitude earthquake that struck the south side of Kilauea island Saturday evening.

The powerful quake struck at 8:47 p.m. about nine miles south of Fern Forest, and was followed by three aftershocks. Measurements from continuous gas monitoring stations located downwind of Puʻuʻōʻō in the Middle East Rift Zone—the site of volcanic activity from 1983 to 2018—remain below detection limits for sulfur dioxide, indicating that sulfur dioxide emissions from Puʻuʻōʻō are negligible.

Kilauea volcano briefly erupted on June 3 southwest of the summit area within a closed area of ​​Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Following this event, magma repressed the storage system beneath Halema'uma'u and the southern caldera, triggering earthquakes in the caldera south of Halema'uma'u and in the upper East Rift Zone.

The long-term gradual inflation of the summit and upper rift area has continued since the end of the eruption.
