Cloud Corporation Schedules Grand Opening of Communication College Technology Education Innovation Center

Cloud County Community College will celebrate the grand opening of its Technology Education Innovation Center on Friday, Aug. 2. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. at the Technology Center, located at 120 East College Drive in Concordia. The public is welcome to attend the ceremony, which will be followed by tours of the center from 1:30-3 p.m.

Construction on the 35,000-square-foot center is scheduled to break ground on March 29, 2023, with construction to begin in April. The $17 million state-of-the-art facility will house courses in nursing, renewable energy, agriculture and industrial technology, including welding and CDL. Classes will begin at the center in the fall 2024 semester.

“This center will house critically important, high-demand research areas,” Cloud Chancellor Amber Knoeggen said. “It will also provide students with an educational environment to explore innovative ideas to advance these industries, ultimately strengthening the Kansas workforce.”

The project was funded entirely through grants, private and industry donations. Major funding sources include Salina Regional Medical Center, North Central Kansas Medical Center, Cloud County Community College Foundation, Sunderland Foundation, Patterson Family Foundation, Earl Bain Foundation, Carl Bill Forshee, Dane G. Hansen Foundation and Cloud Ceramics.

The university has strong relationships with industry partners that have contributed greatly to the success of this project and expanding workforce development in Kansas, Knotgen said.

The building was designed by TESSERE (formerly GLMV Architecture) and McCownGordon Construction served as general contractor.

Following the ribbon cutting, a ceremony to unveil the Orphan Train Statue will be held at 1:30 p.m. The statue depicts two Orphan Train passengers, Thelma Barnhart and Kenneth LeRoy Mansell. Barnhart was the grandmother of former Cloud instructor Todd Leaf and was a longtime teacher in Nebraska. She was adopted by Peter and Kenneth Michaelis through the New York Foundling Hospital. Mansell was placed with Dan and Kenneth Michaelis of Chanute, Kansas, by the New York Child Welfare Society at age 3. He was a lifelong farmer in the Neosho, Kansas area.

Following the statue unveiling, Cloud staff and faculty will lead tours and refreshments will be provided.
