Chicago Fire FC lose 1-0 to San Jose Earthquakes at Paypal Park

SAN JOSE, Calif. (July 7, 2024) – Chicago Fire FC (5-11-6, 21 points) lost 1-0 to the San Jose Earthquakes (4-16-2, 14 points) on Sunday night at Paypal Park.

With this result, the Fire team remains in thirteenth place in the Eastern Conference, four points behind the final playoff spot.

Chicago started strongly, with Maren Haile Selassie breaking through the opposition defence in the first minute, but the referee ruled the Swiss winger offside after his shot went wide. Just three minutes later, striker Hugo Kuipers received the ball, turned and fired a shot that was saved by goalkeeper William Yarbrough.

San Jose scored the first goal just after the start of the second half. Winger Cristian Espinoza curled a free kick over the Fire's backline in the 48th minute. Midfielder Hernan won the race, setting up the ball with his first touch and sending it into the net with his second kick.

The Fire looked to have levelled the score in the 71st minute when midfielder Brian Gutierrez sent the ball into the box, where striker Tom Barlow headed it goalwards. The ball hit the crossbar and came back into play, where Kuipers headed home. However, VAR ruled that Barlow was offside, and the goal was disallowed.

Chris Mueller made his 50th appearance for the Chicago Fire. The Chicago native returned to the starting lineup for the first time since May 18 against the Columbus Crew. Gaston Jimenez captained the team for the first time in 2024. Defenders Chase Jasper (first leg), Andrew Guttmann (first leg), Tobias Sahlquist (first leg) and Carlos Teran (first leg) were not available for today's match; midfielders Xherdan Shaqiri (national team) and Federico Navarro (first leg) were also unavailable for today's match.

Next Match: Chicago returns to the waterfront for its second and final home match of July, hosting New York City FC on Saturday, July 13. Kickoff at Soldier Field is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT. The match will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass and broadcast locally on 890 WLS-AM (English) and WRTO 1200 AM (Spanish).
