Despite Reality, Trump Tries to Distance Himself from Project 2025

In recent weeks, President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign and its allies have been busy educating the public about Project 2025, a right-wing policy platform developed by the Heritage Foundation with the help of several of Donald Trump’s associates. The Democratic incumbent’s campaign website created a page dedicated specifically to the government plan and promoted it on social media in hopes of spreading the word.

The move has caught on. Not only has it become more common to see posts about Google’s 2025 project online, but as my MSNBC colleague Jahan Jones recently noted, the far-right plan has also become a talking point at the Black Entertainment Television Awards after host Taraji P. Henson made several references to it.

On Friday, the situation reached such a point that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee decided to release a brief statement on the matter via his social media platform:

I don't know anything about Project 2025. I have no idea who is behind it. I don't agree with some of the things they say and some of the things they say are absolutely ridiculous and appalling. Whatever they do, I wish them well, but I have nothing to do with them.

There are, of course, some glaring problems with Trump's resistance.

The first is flawed logic: on the one hand, the former president would have the public believe that he knows nothing about Project 2025. On the other hand, Trump considers certain provisions of the right-wing document to be absolutely ridiculous and appalling, suggesting that he at least knows something about it.

The second problem is that it is impossible to take this information seriously. Judd Legum, a journalist at Popular Information, published a detailed critique of this information, highlighting the long list of people on Trump's team who co-authored the Project 2025 document.

“I literally don’t have enough time to list all the connections between Donald Trump and Project 2025,” MSNBC’s Ali Velshi told viewers this weekend. “But I can confidently say that Donald Trump’s claim that he knows nothing about Project 2025 and has no idea who is behind it is… how do you say it in Canada? It’s complete nonsense.”

But I'm also struck by the broader context: Trump wouldn't have bothered to issue a denial if he hadn't been concerned that Democrats' focus on the 2025 project was gaining momentum.

In other words, efforts to make Project 2025 a real campaign issue are having the desired effect and making the former president nervous.
