UK to review how much money could be recovered from Rwanda plan

Under the plan, the Ministry of Home Affairs agreed to contribute money to a fund to support Rwanda's economic growth and provide additional payments to cover the costs of processing and relocating individuals there.

To this end, Britain has already paid Rwanda $220 million by the end of 2023.

Some future payments will be based on the number of individuals moving into the area and will no longer be paid.

“This partnership was initiated by the UK Government to address the irregular migration crisis affecting the UK,” the Rwandan government said in a statement. “Irregular migration is a UK issue, not Rwanda’s issue.

“Rwanda has fully implemented its share of the agreement in terms of finance and remains committed to finding solutions to the global migration crisis, including providing safety, dignity and opportunity for refugees and migrants coming to our country.”

Earlier this year, Rwandan President Paul Kagame suggested that some of the money could be returned if no one was sent to Rwanda.

The Rwandan government later said it would consider Britain's request for a refund, but said it was “under no obligation” to do so.
