Jokowi Endorses Son Kaesang's Political Candidacy, Denies Interference
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has publicly expressed support for his youngest son, Kaesang Pangarep, who may run in the upcoming regional elections. It comes in response to Regulation No. 8 of 2024 of the General Election Commission (PKPU), which takes into account the Supreme Court's decision on the eligibility of candidates for governor and vice governor, candidates for regent and vice regent, and candidates for mayor and deputy mayor.
“A parent’s role is simply to offer support,” he said with a smile when asked about the PKPU that paved the way for Kaesang. The former Solo mayor remained tight-lipped about whether the blessing took place in Jakarta or Central Java.
The new rules allow regional head candidates to be 30 years old by the time of their inauguration in January 2025, up from the previous requirement of being 30 by the time of registration, which was set for August 2024. The Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) chairman's birthday falls in December 2024, making him eligible under the revised rules.
Kaesang has attracted interest from several parties within the Indonesian Advanced Coalition, which supported President-elect Prabowo Subianto, in the Jakarta elections. A recent report in the June 17, 2024 issue of Tempo Magazine suggested a possible “duet” between Kaesang and Golkar politician Ridwan Kamil.
Meanwhile, a poll by the Indonesian Polling Institute (LSI) positioned Kaesang as the frontrunner in a simulated field of candidates for the Central Java regional elections, with an electability rate of 15.9 percent.
Jokowi denies interference with Kaesang's potential candidacy
Recently, Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Secretary General Aboe Bakar Alhabsyi claimed that Jokowi had proposed Kaesang's candidacy for the 2024 Jakarta elections to several parties. “He proposed it, let's see,” he said at the closing of the PKS party school at Grand Sahid Jaya in Jakarta on Thursday, June 27.
According to Aboe, it is not uncommon for high-ranking figures to get involved. “No problem. Let's just let it happen.”
He, however, stopped short of confirming or denying whether the president had offered Kaesang to his party. He also avoided mentioning the names of other parties that had received the offer.
Jokowi dismissed the issue of interference in regional elections, stressing that electoral matters are the responsibility of political parties. “Nominations are a party matter. I am not a party leader, nor a party owner. So don’t ask me [about the regional elections]” he said in Karawang, West Java, on July 3.
Jokowi also denied the PKS secretary general's accusations, saying he never promoted Kaesang to any party.
