Rawalpindi court rejects Imran Khan's request to have weekly WhatsApp calls with his sons

A Rawalpindi court on Monday rejected Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan's request to have a weekly WhatsApp call with his sons, ARY News reported. Imran Khan had sought permission to have weekly conversations with his children who reside in the UK.

The jail administration has argued that there is no legal provision allowing prisoners to communicate with their relatives via WhatsApp. The court had earlier allowed Khan to speak twice a month with his children, who live in the UK with their mother, Jemima Khan. Khan had earlier filed a petition with the Rawalpindi Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) after he was denied telephone communication from Adiala Jail. He argued that he had the right under the law to speak with his sons.

The ATC, headed by Justice Malik Aijaz Asif, has sought a response from the jail authorities, ARY News reported. Meanwhile, an anti-terrorism court has reserved its decision on Khan’s bail pleas regarding the May 9, 2023, incidents. Khan’s lawyer argued that he was being politically targeted, saying no individual had faced so many cases. The government’s lawyer countered that Khan had incited his supporters to target facilities if he was arrested. The court reserved its decision after hearing both sides.

On May 9, 2022, violent protests erupted across Pakistan following Khan's arrest, leading to attacks on military installations, including the corps commander's house in Lahore. Khan was named as the main accused of the riots, according to ARY News. (ANI)
