Reuters: U.S. House Speaker Johnson to meet Zelenskyy at Washington summit
US House Speaker Mike Johnson will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on July 10 during the NATO summit, Reuters reports.
From July 9 to 11, Washington will host the NATO summit. Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg recently announced that military aid to Ukraine would be the most urgent issue to be resolved in the American capital.
Stoltenberg also said he expects alliance leaders to agree on a new NATO command in Wiesbaden to coordinate training and the provision of security assistance to Ukraine.
Last month, NATO defense ministers approved a long-term plan to help Ukraine and train its military personnel, but they have yet to agree on regular financial contributions.
In the meantime, Ukrainian Officials say they are concerned about the future of U.S. support for kyiv if Donald Trump wins the Nov. 5 presidential election.
In April 2024, Johnson was criticized for his lack of speed in implementing the Ukraine aid bill. However, the Speaker of the House of Representatives changed his mind and launched a $95 billion bipartisan aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, which was opposed by former President Trump's allies in Congress.
Earlier, Johnson said that the current partial authorizations granted to Ukrainian forces to use U.S. weapons by President Joe Biden's administration to strike Russian targets are insufficient, and that Washington should stop “micromanaging the war effort in Ukraine,” Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported. informed.
