Kenya must compensate family of slain Pakistani journalist, court says | WKZO | All Kalamazoo

NAIROBI (Reuters) – The Kenyan government must pay 10 million shillings ($78,300) to the family of a prominent Pakistani journalist shot dead by police in the capital Nairobi in 2022, a Kenyan court ruled on Monday.

Television journalist Arshad Sharif, who had fled Pakistan due to death threats, was shot dead in Nairobi in October that year.

Kenyan authorities said it was a case of mistaken identity and that police, searching for car thieves, opened fire on his vehicle as he drove through a roadblock without stopping.

A two-member investigation team from Pakistan, which reconstructed the crime scene and examined the phones and computers of the deceased, said in a 600-page report that Sharif's murder was a planned killing.

Last October, his widow, Javeria Siddique, sued the paramilitary General Service Unit of the Kenyan police over her husband's wrongful death.

Sharif fled Pakistan after the government registered several treason charges against him.

One of the treason cases arose from an accusation that Sharif's reporting had broadcast a call by an official in a previous government, led by former cricket star Imran Khan, for members of the armed forces to mutiny.

Sharif and the previous government official have both denied inciting the mutiny.
