Mitrovic names U.S. men's Olympic soccer team

The U.S. men's soccer team announced its roster for the Paris Olympics on Monday, with coach Marko Mitrovic including rising stars and older players such as Walker Zimmerman and Miles Robinson in his 18-member squad.

The United States will compete in the Olympics for the first time since 2008 when it travels to Paris for the 2024 Games, which begin later this month.

Unlike the women's event, the men's Olympic football tournament is restricted to players under 23, with room for three overage players.

Nashville defender Zimmerman, FC Cincinnati defender Robinson and Colorado Rapids midfielder Djordje Mihailovic are all longtime players at the top of Mitrovic's Olympic list.

Robinson is the only American player to have played in the 2024 Copa America and will compete in the Paris Olympics. He was part of the U.S. team that was eliminated in the group stage of the Copa America.

The Olympic roster includes players from 15 clubs, including nine from Major League Soccer. It includes Gianluca Busio and Tanner Tessmann, who recently helped Italian club Venezia to promotion to Serie A, Italy's top flight.

Of those 18 players, 15 were selected by the U.S. men's national team, led by defender Zimmerman, who has made 42 international appearances. Zimmerman was part of the U.S. men's team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The schedule

The men's Olympic football tournament will run from July 24 to August 9 in seven cities and stadiums across France. The U.S. team will begin its campaign in Group A on July 24, two days before the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Games.

Their first match will be against France, followed by a match against New Zealand on July 27 and against Guinea on July 30.

The United States will prepare for the Paris Games at FC Girondins de Bordeaux from July 9-20 before traveling to Marseille for their opening match against France.

The United States' best men's finish at the Olympics came at the 2000 Games in Sydney, when a team of Landon Donovan, Brad Friedel and Josh Wolff led the United States to a fourth-place finish.
