New British Prime Minister Keir Starmer wants to improve Boris Johnson's failed Brexit deal with the EU

The newly appointed Labour government is seeking to reset relations with the EU. London wants a renewed deal on post-Brexit trade rules, but also a common security pact that covers defence, energy, the climate crisis, pandemics and illegal immigration, Reuters and The Guardian report.
New British Prime Minister Keir Starmer vowed on Monday that he would secure an improved deal with the European Union on post-Brexit trade rules and restore the failed agreement signed by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Reuters reports.
Speaking in Belfast after talks with leaders of Northern Ireland, where post-Brexit trade rules have dominated politics for years, Starmer said his new government should first implement changes to the current deal to build trust with the European Union.
“We believe we can get a better deal than the failed deal that Boris Johnson offered and we will work towards that,” said Starmer, who won a landslide election victory last week.
We will not be able to build better relations without demonstrating our commitment to the relationship and to the agreements already implemented, he added.
Labour has ruled out a return to the EU's single market or customs union but said it was possible to remove some trade barriers with the bloc, which Britain left in 2020.
The new government in London is considering a broader project to reset its relationship with the EU.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy said: The Guardian c Labour wants a comprehensive joint declaration with the EU to introduce a comprehensive security pact covering defence, energy, the climate crisis, pandemics and even illegal immigration.
Lammy said such a deal would not undermine Labour's commitment to staying out of the EU's single market and customs union.
Under Labour's plans, the deal would allow Britain to work more closely with the European bloc in a range of security areas, ideally without the need for a legally binding agreement that could take years.
