PORT ALICE, British Columbia, Canada — A 6.4-magnitude earthquake in the Pacific Ocean was “mildly felt” on Vancouver Island Thursday morning, Earthquakes Canada said.

The agency said the powerful quake, which struck at 8:08 a.m., was centered in waters southwest of Port Alice, British Columbia, but there were no reports of damage and no damage was expected.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was about 209 kilometers west of the city of Tofino, British Columbia.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was the largest in a cluster of quakes around the same location, including 4.3 and 5.4 magnitude quakes later in the morning.

But the earlier quake was much stronger, releasing 30 times more energy than the larger quake that followed, according to a USGS calculator.

None of the quakes, which occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometres in the Pacific Ocean, caused a tsunami, Earthquakes Canada said.
