Earthquake hits much of southwest Washington Thursday night

A magnitude 3.5 earthquake was felt in southwest Washington on Thursday evening, with residents from Longview to Centralia to East Lewis County reporting feeling the quake.

According to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, the quake was centered along the border between Cowlitz and Lewis counties, south of Morton and north of Mount St. Helens. The quake was reported at a depth of 8.5 miles at 11:16 p.m. Thursday.

According to Britannica, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 is considered “small” and although it “might be felt by many people,” it is unlikely to cause damage. According to Britannica, between 12,000 and 100,000 earthquakes of this magnitude occur each year.

Earlier Thursday, the Philippine Seismological Network reported a 6.4-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Vancouver Island. In a Facebook post, the network said a cluster of fireworks off the coast of Washington was “notable in size and number” but “not threatening.”

The earthquakes occurred off the coast of Washington on the Juan de Fuca Ridge and the Nootka Fault Zone, not the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

“These types of earthquakes are extremely unlikely to cause tsunamis, and are also unlikely to affect a subduction fault,” the National Earthquake Network wrote.

Scientists are closely watching the Cascadia subduction zone for signs of a “big bang.”

The last major earthquake in the Cascadia region was in 1700, with a magnitude of 9.0 on the Richter scale. Scientists estimate that such quakes occur every 300 to 500 years along the fault line, which runs for 600 miles along the Pacific coast.

According to the US Geological Survey, “about 350 earthquakes have been recorded at Mount St. Helens since mid-February,” which represents “the largest short-term increase in earthquake rates since the last eruption ended in 2008.”

Although this activity is described as “recharge,” the USGS does not expect an imminent eruption.
