Mosquito in Kent County tests positive for Jamestown Canyon virus
GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — The Jamestown Canyon virus has been detected in mosquitoes in Kent County, the Kent County Health Department (KCHD) announced Monday.
The discovery was made during ongoing surveillance and testing conducted by KCHD in Grand Rapids and nearby Walker and is not a case of human infection.
“The good news is that the measures people can take to protect themselves against other mosquito-borne diseases are also effective against Jamestown Canyon virus,” said KCHD Supervisory Sanitarium Officer Brendan Earl. “This time of year, mosquito activity is high, so it's good to practice simple, proven measures to prevent mosquito bites.”
Jamestown Canyon virus is spread to humans by infected mosquitoes from April to September.
Officials say infections have been confirmed across the country, but Minnesota and Wisconsin have reported more than half of all cases so far.
People who believe they may have been infected with Jamestown Canyon virus through a mosquito bite are advised to watch for fever, headache and fatigue.
Officials say the virus can cause rare but serious illnesses, including infection of the brain (encephalitis) and the mucous membranes surrounding the brain (meningitis).
As of Monday, there is no vaccine or medicine to prevent or treat Jamestown Canyon virus infection.
To prevent mosquito bites, Michiganders are advised to:
- Use mosquito repellents that contain at least 10-35% DEET (read and follow product instructions)
- Please wear light-colored long-sleeved shirts and pants
- To reduce your risk of being stung, stay indoors at dusk.
- Remove or refill water from bird baths, wading pools, pet water bowls and other small containers that collect water in the garden.
- Make sure your window screens are in good condition
