Niagara Health to host hepatitis awareness event on July 26
Niagara Health will host a community event in St. Catharines to mark World Hepatitis Day.
The event will be held at Montebello Park on Friday, July 26th from 11am-3pm and will provide education on the services offered by Niagara Health's Hepatitis C Care Clinic, as well as other resources for Hepatitis C, liver health, addiction and local mental health services, private testing and more. The event will also feature a Community Health and Social Services Fair featuring various community organizations and programs.
Our annual World Hepatitis Day event follows the success of the Canadian Viral Hepatitis Day event held in Niagara Falls this May.
“This event provides a valuable platform for education, support and destigmatization,” said Brenda Yendle, clinical services manager for addiction services and mental health at Niagara Health. “By bringing the community together, it creates an environment where individuals can access information, resources and services and take control of their health.”
Hepatitis C is spread when blood containing the virus enters another person's bloodstream. Thousands of people in Canada are infected, but many go undiagnosed and undiagnosed. If you think you may have been exposed to Hepatitis C, it's important to get tested.
Registered nurses and outreach workers at the clinic will provide private testing for Hepatitis C. Community partners, including Screen For Life Coach, will also be participating in the awareness day events.
The Hepatitis C Care Clinic, part of the Addiction Services Program, opened in 2011 and provides testing, treatment, case management, counseling and support. Education sessions are available upon request.
