SpongeBob has autism, says voice actor Tom Kenny

Tom Kenny gives his opinion on what he thinks SpongeBob's superpower is.
At the 2024 Motor City Comic Con in Detroit, the famous voice actor explained that SpongeBob SquarePants is autistic. During a question-and-answer session, a video posted on ToonHive X Account captured Kenny as he recalled the moment he first revealed his characters' neurodivergence.
SpongeBob is also an autistic character, he said. “That was the first time I'd ever been asked that question. A person who was clearly autistic came up to me and said, 'I have a question for you, Tom Kenny. Is SpongeBob autistic?'”
He remembers saying, “Sure!” Then he continued, “You know what? It’s his superpower, just like it’s your superpower.”
The crowd cheered as Kenny gave this explanation, gathering support for his answer.
Kenny has previously spoken about SpongeBob being autistic, stating on Marc Maron's What is this ? podcast In October 2012, “I don't know what it is about this show that speaks to kids who are autistic, but more than other cartoons… because SpongeBob as a character is a little bit autistic. Obsessed with his work, very hardworking, he really puts a lot of effort into something.”
THE Spongebob The show's cast has always been very open about viewers' reactions to the show. In February, Carolyn Lawrence, who voices Sandy Cheeks, said her daughters had mixed feelings about it.
“I have two daughters. My oldest never liked the show,” she admitted to PEOPLE at the time. “But my youngest, I can still hear her laughing. She watches it, I can hear her laughing and giggling.”
Kenny, who shares children Mack and Nora with wife Jill Talley, shared his own experience.
“My kids grew up with SpongeBob SquarePants as a family business and as the most important character to their classmates,” he explained. “And maybe because our faces aren't in it, they were always able to appreciate SpongeBob SquarePants as something separate and apart from their stupid old parents. That was really cool.”

Bill Fagerbakke, who voices Patrick Star, said he didn't know if the Nickelodeon comedy would be successful until he saw his children react to it.
“That’s how I realized the pilot was as good as I thought it was,” Fagerbakke said. “Because I didn’t know anything, I didn’t understand anything when we recorded it, and then we got the pilot in the mail on a videotape.”

He said his daughters Carson and Hannah, whom he shares with wife Catherine McClenahan, “were 4 and 6 at the time. I called them and said, 'Look at this.' And they loved it.”
