Southeast Missouri Wakes Up to New Madrid Earthquake Wednesday

If you blinked, you missed it. It was brief, but there was an earthquake to keep everyone in southeast Missouri on their toes thanks to the never-ending New Madrid Fault.

I noticed a circle in southeast Missouri on the USGS seismic map early Wednesday morning. The epicenter of this minor earthquake was west of New Madrid, Missouri.

This wasn’t a big earthquake, to say the least. The USGS put the magnitude at just 2.4. There’s nothing unusual about this quake, but it’s a reminder that southeast Missouri remains one of the most, if not the most, seismically active areas in America, rivaling even the infamous San Andreas Fault.

This is likely just an isolated earthquake, but if it is just the first of many to hit the area, I will update this article with new information. For now, it is business as usual in southeast Missouri. Another day, another earthquake.
