On July 21, City Councilwoman Lynn Schulman hosted what she billed as the first-ever Bollywood film screening in a New York City park as part of the Movies Under the Stars series. The initiative aims to bring diverse movie experiences to District 29. A vibrant crowd of moviegoers gathered at Smokey Phil Rizzuto Park in South Richmond Hill to watch the action-comedy Golmaal 3.
“South Richmond Hill is a majority immigrant community that has been overlooked for a very long time,” community advocate Japneet Singh said in a statement. “So when Councillor Lynn Schulman took over the majority of Richmond Hill and showed interest in improving our community, we were very optimistic. We asked her to bring culturally appropriate entertainment to our parks over the summer. She promised she would try, and this past weekend, she delivered.”
Community Council 9 President Sherry Algredo called the initiative a welcome addition to the community.
“I am thrilled to support initiatives like Movies Under the Stars that celebrate our city’s cultural diversity,” said Schulman. “The first Bollywood Movie Night was a huge success, and I look forward to continuing to expand these opportunities in this neighborhood and bringing more culturally relevant films to our parks.”
