A Lasting Impression Deb Krajec & Marquette Theatre

How do you measure a career? By students mentored, costumes designed or perhaps the overall impact on an institution like Marquettes’ theater arts program. In Deb Krajec’s case, that’s just the beginning.

As Marquette Theatre celebrated 100 years of theater on campus and 50 years of the Helfaer Theatre, the Diederich College of Communication also honored Deb Krajecs’ 40 years of influence and impact on students and campus. This past April, alumni, students, faculty, and staff gathered to commemorate each of these anniversaries, with a special focus on Deb as she prepared to retire from her position as associate professor of digital media and performing arts.

As a faculty member, Deb touched the lives and experiences of countless students who found their way to her office and care. As Lex Gernon-Wyatt, Comm ’16, noted: “Deb’s office was truly one of my favorite places on the entire Marquette campus. No windows, but shelves and shelves of scripts and reference books and presentation binders. And posters and syllabi and photos all over the walls of things she had seen, things she had done and designed. So much possibility. Sometimes that’s the kind of space you need when you’re 19 and confused.”

Matthew Read, Comm 24, shared that Deb’s tutelage made him a better actor while instilling confidence in his craft: “I don’t have the experience in the world to play Marc Antony in Julius Caesar or the nose to play Cyrano de Bergerac, but once I started working on those monologues over and over with Deb, I was able to find something in myself that made those monologues into pieces that I was proud of. And every student here who has had the opportunity to work with Deb will tell you the same thing. She makes you better. And there’s such a joy when you work with Deb, because you feel like there’s just no place she’d rather be than there, helping you be your best.”

Theatre Arts faculty member Stephen Hudson-Mairet summed up Debs' impact in moving terms:

In many ways, Deb embodies what it means to be a theatre artist at Marquette University. She is multifaceted as a performer, director, designer, and teacher. She pushes herself and her students to give their all to create great works of art. She creates art that pursues the larger truth of humanity’s existence. Deb asks her students’ big questions and helps them express those questions through their art. Deb demonstrates to our students that she continually focuses on finding the common humanity of playwrights, their stories, and the characters the students embody. I believe the ultimate measure of any faculty member is the impact they make.

And it's clear that Debs' influence will be felt through many future seasons of theater.
