Munich 2024 AIDS Conference calls for 'people first'
MUNICH (KABC) — This week, world leaders gathered in Munich, Germany, for the International AIDS Conference.
The world's largest conference on HIV and AIDS brought together scientists, policy makers, medical experts and people living with HIV.
“We must vigorously advocate for human rights and put people first,” Sharon Lewin, president of the International AIDS Society and international co-chair, said at the conference.
Person-centred care was a key focus of many sessions held throughout the conference.
This week's highlights PURPOSE 1 Study ResultsThe study looked at the effectiveness of a new, long-acting, twice-yearly injection of lenacapavir, which was 100% effective in preventing new infections in women, according to results published this week.
The drug could be a breakthrough for people with HIV.
Conference attendees also had the unique opportunity to hear from another HIV survivor, Mark Franke, the “Düsseldorf patient.”
Franke is one of a small number of people who have been successfully cured of HIV. Attendees also heard a report on a new “Berlin patient,” who has been in HIV remission for the past five years without the need for antiretroviral drugs.
