Turkish Red Crescent helps earthquake-hit businesses recover

The Turkish Red Crescent has completed the second phase of the Craftsmen Support Program, which started after the Kahramanmaraş earthquake.

In order to heal the wounds of traders in the most affected regions and revive the local economy, this support provided a second payment of 97,865,000 Turkish Liras (2,965,606 US Dollars) to a total of 3,544 business owners. Thus, the total payment provided under the program in 2024 reached 196,765,000 Turkish Liras.

In total, 3,544 employers benefited from the second phase of the Craftsmen Support Program, including 550 in Adıyaman, 215 in Gaziantep, 1,478 in Hatay, 583 in Kahramanmaraş, 562 in Malatya and 156 in Osmaniye. These businesses operate in various sectors, from plumbing to confectionery, from hairdressing to tailoring.

The Red Crescent Society aims to help business owners restore their activities by providing equipment, raw materials and other supplies through the Traders Support Program, which supports the resumption of economic activities in the earthquake-affected governorates. The program prioritizes vulnerable groups, including the disabled, women and the elderly, to ensure that all segments of society participate in the economic recovery process.

Basic eligibility criteria for the Trader Support Program include that the business be directly affected by the earthquake, that the owner be able to resume operations, that the business be classified as micro or small, and that it be registered with the Chamber of Traders and Craftsmen.

The first payments were made to all artisans who met these criteria last June, followed by the planned second payments upon submission of the required documents. Following the earthquakes that occurred on February 6, the Red Crescent provided 25 million Turkish Liras to support 607 artisans in 2023 as part of the program.

The organization continues its efforts to accelerate economic recovery in the earthquake zone and help traders return to their professional lives.
