April quake, aftershocks raise Taiwan's east coast by more than 30cm | Taiwan News

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Parts of Taiwan's eastern coastal landscape have risen more than 30 centimeters in height over the four months since a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck on April 3, according to satellite data.

The largest total height increase recorded as a result of the earthquake was measured near Shufeng Railway Station in Hualien at 39.3 cm. The maximum horizontal displacement change was measured near Dongguanzhou Station in Taitung County at 32.7 cm.

The Ministry of Interior announced the measurements in a detailed report on measurements made by the domestically produced Global Navigation Satellite System, according to the Chinese news agency. The system recorded consistent measurements from 247 detection points over the past four months and found significant differences in elevation at 138 of the detection points compared with measurements made on April 2.

Although the most significant changes were on the east coast, it is estimated that the elevation of points throughout Taiwan increased by more than a centimeter. The report indicates that detection points in the northern region increased by 1 to 4 cm, those in the western part of Taiwan increased by 1 to 6 cm, and those in southern Taiwan increased by 1 to 2 cm.

Much of the landscape in Taiwan was transformed between April 3 and April 22, a period that saw more than a thousand aftershocks, more than 300 of them measuring between 4 and 5 on the Richter scale. The massive earthquake, and the initial 237 aftershocks over the next 19 hours, are said to have had the force of 39 atomic bombs.

The Ministry of Interior noted that Hualien's landscape has seen a dramatic increase in average elevation over the past four years. Since 2020, Hualien County has seen an increase in elevation of 49.1 centimeters, with the highest horizontal displacement recorded at 43.8 centimeters, according to the Xinhua news agency.
