Classes suspended in two towns in Davao de Oro after 6.8 magnitude quake

Classes were suspended in at least two towns in Davao de Oro on Monday, August 5, 2024, following the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Surigao del Sur over the weekend.

These cities are Montevista and Moncayo. The city of Compostela also announced that it would suspend classes, but the suspension was lifted on Sunday.

The local governments of Montevista and Moncayo announced in an advisory, the suspension of classes at all levels and the work of teaching and non-teaching personnel.

Classes have been suspended to ensure the safety of students and school staff and to allow Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDANA) teams to assess and inspect school buildings and other structures.

These cities felt the intensity of the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Surigao del Sur at around 6:22 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2024.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Lingig, Surigao del Sur province, and the depth of the earthquake was nine kilometers.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the earthquake was of tectonic origin but there was no tsunami threat.

According to a report by Super Radio dzBB, at least 468 aftershocks were recorded, the strongest of which reached 6.1 magnitude.
