California Earthquake Update: Map Reveals Locations of Aftershocks

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck near the town of Lamont, California, followed by a number of aftershocks.

The earthquake struck at 9:09 p.m. local time and was felt in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento.

USGS data revealed the location of the earthquake's epicenter in Kern County, 18 miles southeast of Bakersfield, and the locations of at least 49 subsequent aftershocks.

The map of the immediate area shows the locations of the most recent aftershocks, all of which were distributed around the epicenter. The strongest of these aftershocks were of magnitude 4.5, 4.1, and 4.0 on the Richter scale. The rest of the aftershocks were of magnitude less than 4.0.

Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that occur in the same general area within days of a larger earthquake. They are a natural part of the Earth's crust adjusting as it responds to the new distribution of stress caused by the mainshock, and they usually decrease in frequency and magnitude over time. The largest aftershock is usually about 1 to 2 Richter scale units smaller than the mainshock.

The duration of aftershock activity can vary greatly, lasting from several days to years, depending on the size of the main shock and the geological conditions of the area.

According to the USGS, there is a 99% chance of another aftershock greater than M3 in the coming week, a 93% chance of an aftershock greater than M4, a 25% chance of an aftershock greater than M5, and a 3% chance of an aftershock greater than 6.

The magnitude of an earthquake is a measure of the energy released during a seismic event. The magnitude scale is logarithmic, meaning that each integer increase on the scale represents an increase in the measured amplitude by a factor of 10, and approximately 31.6 times as much energy is released.

Earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.0 to 4.9 can cause noticeable shaking of indoor objects, while earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 to 5.9 can cause damage to buildings and other structures. Earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.0 to 6.9 can cause a lot of damage in populated areas, while earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.0 or greater can cause severe damage across large areas.

The USGS originally estimated the quake's magnitude at 5.3, but it was later downgraded to 5.2. Mild tremors were felt during a baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, but the only places where the tremors were “moderate” or “strong” were near the epicenter, near the Lake Buena Vista stream and scattered around Kern County.

No damage was reported from the quake, but a rock fell on southbound I-5 causing two lanes to be closed while it was being removed, ABC7 in Los Angeles reported.

“Los Angeles Fire Department personnel surveyed the City of Los Angeles by land, air and sea following a 5.3 magnitude earthquake that occurred at 9:09 p.m. Pacific Time and was centered south of Bakersfield, California. No major damage or injuries to infrastructure or facilities were observed within the City of Los Angeles,” according to a Los Angeles Fire Department statement.

I felt this earthquake for a change. The 5.2 magnitude quake occurred at the southern end of the Central Valley. It is near the White Wolf Fault, which caused a 7.5 magnitude quake in 1952, but it does not appear to be on this fault.

The quake occurred near the fault that caused the deadly Kern County earthquake in 1952, seismologist Lucy Jones said on X-Channel.

“It is close to the White Wolf fault that produced M7.5 in 1952 but does not appear to lie on that fault,” she posted.

The 7.5-magnitude quake killed more than 10 people and injured hundreds more, and was the country's largest since the 1906 quake that devastated much of San Francisco, sparked fires, destroyed tens of thousands of buildings and killed more than 3,000 people.
