First case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis of 2024 found in horse in Michigan
LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Michigan’s first Eastern Equine Encephalitis EEE for 2024 detected.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) reported the disease was detected in a Van Buren County Standardbred mare that had not been vaccinated against EEE, according to MDARD.
“While this is the first case of EEE detected this season, other mosquito-borne diseases have been found across Michigan, including one human case of West Nile Virus,” said State Veterinarian Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM. “These detections clearly indicate disease is widespread among our state's mosquitoes, and it is important to protect animals and humans from these insects. Avoiding mosquito bites can help prevent mosquito-borne diseases.”
According to MDARD, EEE is a zoonotic, viral disease that can be transmitted to both animals and humans through mosquito bites. MDARD says mosquito-borne diseases like EEE are not spread by contact from horse-to-horse or horse-to-human.
“It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to cause serious illness,” said MDHHS Chief Medical Officer Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian. “We urge Michiganders to take precautions such as using EPA-registered insect repellents when outdoors, avoiding mosquito-filled areas when possible, and wearing clothing that covers arms and legs to protect against bites. EEE is one of the most dangerous mosquito-borne diseases in the United States, with a 33% mortality rate among those who contract it.”
While there have been no further detections of EEE in animals or humans in Michigan, MDARD has confirmed that West Nile virus (WNV) has been detected in 48 mosquito populations, 12 wild birds, and One person.
MDARD says to prevent outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases in horses and other animals, owners can take the following measures:
- Consult your veterinarian Horse Vaccination Protection against EEE, WNV and other mosquito-borne diseases.
- Eliminate standing water: fill puddles, repair eaves, and change water in buckets and bowls at least once a day.
- Mosquitoes are not strong fliers, so keep livestock in barns under electric fans and keep pets inside during dusk and dawn, when mosquito activity is at its peak.
- Use species-approved repellents on animals.
- Contact your veterinarian if your animal shows signs of illness.

To prevent mosquito-borne diseases, the following steps are recommended:
- Apply an insect repellent containing the active ingredient DEET or other EPA-approved product to exposed skin and clothing. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.
- Wear light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors, and use insect repellent on your clothes to prevent bites.
- Keep window and door screens closed at all times to keep mosquitoes out.
- Dump water from mosquito breeding sites around the home, such as buckets, unused wading pools, old tires, and other water-holding containers where mosquitoes may lay eggs.
