Michigan's first EEE case of 2024 confirmed in horse in Van Buren County
Van Buren County, Michigan — Michigan's first case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) of 2024 has been confirmed in a horse in Van Buren County, according to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD).
Officials said Wednesday that the horse, a Standardbred mare, had not been vaccinated against EEE, a viral disease that can be transmitted to both animals and humans through mosquito bites.
“While this is the first case of EEE found this season, other mosquito-borne diseases have been found across Michigan, including one human case of West Nile Virus,” said State Veterinarian Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM. “These detections clearly indicate that disease is widespread among our state's mosquitoes, and it is important to protect animals and people from these insects. Avoiding mosquito bites can help prevent mosquito-borne diseases.”
Officials say EEE is not spread through contact from animal to animal or from animals to humans.
Cases are typically seen in late summer and early fall, and so far there have been no additional detections of EEE in animals or humans.
“It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to cause serious illness,” said MDHHS Chief Medical Officer Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian. “We urge Michiganders to take precautions such as using EPA-registered insect repellents when outdoors, avoiding mosquito-filled areas when possible, and wearing clothing that covers arms and legs to protect against bites. EEE is one of the most dangerous mosquito-borne diseases in the United States, with a 33% mortality rate among those who contract it.”
Michigan's first case of EEE was confirmed on Wednesday, but West Nile virus has been detected in 48 mosquito nests, 12 wild birds and one human, according to MDARD.
To prevent mosquito-borne diseases in horses and other animals, owners are encouraged to take the following measures:
- Consult your veterinarian about vaccinating your horse against EEE, WNV and other mosquito-borne diseases.
- Eliminate standing water: fill puddles, repair eaves, and change water in buckets and bowls at least once a day.
- During the hours of dusk and dawn, when mosquito activity is at its peak, keep livestock in barns under fans (mosquitoes are not strong flyers) and keep pets inside the house.
- Use species-approved repellents on animals.
- Contact your veterinarian if your pet shows signs of illness
People can also protect themselves from mosquito-borne diseases by:
- Apply insect repellent containing the active ingredient DEET, or other EPA-approved products, to exposed skin and clothing.
- Always follow manufacturer's instructions for use. Wear light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors. Apply insect repellent to clothing to prevent bites.
- Keep window and door screens closed at all times to keep mosquitoes out.
- Dump water from mosquito breeding sites around the home, such as buckets, unused wading pools, old tires, and other water-holding containers where mosquitoes may lay eggs.
