Far fewer Americans think childhood vaccines are important

A new poll finds that the number of Americans who say it's important for parents to vaccinate their children is falling, with the decline almost entirely among Republicans and Republican-leaning adults.

What you need to know

  • The number of Americans who say it's important for parents to vaccinate their children is falling, and that drop is almost entirely among Republicans and Republican-leaning adults, a new poll finds.
  • According to a Gallup poll released Wednesday, 40% of Americans say vaccinating children is very important, down from 58% in 2019 and 64% in 2001.
  • Twenty-six percent of Republicans and Republican leaners say it's very important today for parents to vaccinate their children, half as many as in 2019 (52%).
  • In 2001, there was little difference between Democrats and Republicans' views on childhood vaccines.

according to A Gallup poll released WednesdayIn 2019, 40% of Americans said it is very important for children to be vaccinated, down from 58% in 2019 and 64% in 2001.

When Gallup asked the same question in 2001, 94% of Americans said they thought vaccinating children was “extremely important” or “very important.” Today, that figure is 69%.

Polls have shown that sentiment toward vaccines has remained relatively steady over the years among Democrats and Democratic-leaning adults, but has plummeted among conservatives.

Twenty-six percent of Republicans and Republican leaners say it is very important today for parents to vaccinate their children, half as many as in 2019 (52%).

In 2001, there was little difference between Democrats and Republicans' views on vaccinating children: According to Gallup, 66% of liberals and 62% of conservatives thought vaccinations were very important. Today, there is a 34-point gap between the two groups: 63% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning adults say vaccinations are very important, while only 26% of Republicans and Republican-leaning adults agree.

One in nine conservatives (11%) say it is not important at all for children to be vaccinated, but overall, a majority of Republicans and Republican leaners (52%) say vaccination is extremely or very important.

Among Democrats, that number is 93%.

Also, far fewer Americans now believe that the government should require children to be vaccinated against infectious diseases: in a 1991 Princeton Survey Research Associates poll, 81% of respondents supported mandatory government vaccinations for children; today, that figure has fallen to 51% in a Gallup poll.

The 1991 survey didn't ask respondents about their political leanings, but Gallup found that opposition to the mandate has increased among conservatives since 2019, while there has been little change among Democrats and Democratic leaning voters.

Polls have shown that conservatives are increasingly likely to see vaccines as more dangerous than the diseases they are meant to prevent: 31% of Republicans and Republican leaners now say vaccinations are a greater threat, up from 12% in 2019 and 6% in 2001.

Only 5% of Democrats and Democratic leaners say vaccines are a bigger concern right now.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many Republicans have raised concerns, often backed by misinformation, about the safety of the coronavirus vaccines.

In July 2021, Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a health advisory stating that misinformation plays a large role in preventing Americans from getting vaccinated.

Vaccine hesitancy then appears to be spreading to non-COVID-19 vaccinations as well. Last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a study showing that routine immunization rates for preschoolers had dropped from 95% in the 2019-20 school year to 93% in the 2021-22 school year. Officials said the gap means at least a quarter of a million children are left unprotected.

The CDC recommends a wide range of vaccines for children, including polio, chickenpox, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and more.

The Gallup telephone poll was conducted July 1-21 among 1,010 adults in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
