If it seems like there have been more larger earthquakes in Southern California lately, that's because there have been more.

Dr. Lucy Jones, a seismologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, posted on social media Tuesday that there have been 13 earthquakes in Southern California of magnitude 4.0 or greater this year.

There have been approximately five earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater in Southern California each year over the past 20 years.

Since 1932, the average number of earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater in Southern California has been between 10 and 12, Jones said. The number of earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater in 2024 is closer to the average recorded in Southern California over the past 90 years.

A 4.4-magnitude earthquake, centered near Highland Park, struck a wide swath of Southern California on Monday.

The quake struck at 12:20 p.m., with its epicenter about 2 miles southeast of Highland Park, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was initially reported as a magnitude 4.6, but was later downgraded to 4.4. The quake struck at a depth of about 7.5 miles.

Many residents reported feeling dizzy for several seconds. In Pasadena, near the epicenter, a water line broke as a result of the quake at the Pasadena City Hall, and water could be seen pouring from a pipe on the outside of the building. Employees mostly evacuated the building but began returning inside around 1:15 p.m.

The quake appeared to be centered on the same set of faults that caused the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake, Jones told reporters. It was roughly the same location as a 3.4-magnitude quake on June 2, she said.

“There have been others in the past,” Jones said. “In 1989, we had a couple of four-and-a-half-inch jets also in the system and they were only a half-hour apart. There have been a lot of smaller jets over the years that have also been in this system.”

The quake comes on the heels of a 5.2-magnitude quake on Aug. 6 that was centered in the Bakersfield area and was also felt across much of Southern California.

Local officials urged residents to use the quake as a reminder to be prepared for an earthquake at any time.

“Having lived through the Northridge earthquake, today’s earthquake reminded me of what we know about earthquake lifesaving: drop, cover and hold on,” county Supervisor Kathryn Barger said in a statement Monday. “It also served as a reminder to all of us that we live in earthquake country — and we need to be prepared.”
