In the Alaska Peninsula, earthquakes subside at a depth of about 150 miles (241 km), reflecting the Pacific Plate’s downward extension. The Aleutian-Alaska Wadati-Benioff region produces thousands of earthquakes each year, most of which are too deep and small to be felt. Notable examples of these earthquakes include the 1999 magnitude 7.0 Kodiak Island earthquake and the 2001 magnitude 6.9 earthquake. Both earthquakes caused damage and disruption to the city of Kodiak and other communities on the island. (3) Crustal earthquakes in this region can be attributed to the Kodiak Escarpment Fault Zone and the volcanic arc. In 1912, a series of magnitude 7.0 earthquakes were associated with the eruption of Novarupta, the largest volcanic eruption worldwide in the 20th century.
