Two earthquakes hit Jammu and Kashmir, people rush out of their homes and call loved ones to check on them

Srinagar, August 20: Two consecutive earthquakes, one measuring 4.7 and the other 4.8 on the Richter scale, struck Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday morning, triggering panic among people who rushed out of their homes and called their loved ones to inquire about their safety.

The first quake struck at 06:45:57 IST, a local meteorological department official said. It was followed by a second quake within a few minutes. The first quake was at 34.37 degrees north latitude and 74.16 degrees east longitude, the meteorological department official here said. As for the second quake, the official said it had a magnitude of 4.8 and struck at 6:52:29 IST. It was at 34.20 degrees north latitude and 74.31 degrees east longitude.

He added that the epicentres of the two earthquakes were in Baramulla at a depth of 5 and 10 kilometres respectively.

There were no immediate reports of damage from the quakes, which caused panic among people who ran out of their homes in the Kashmir Valley.

According to the seismic zoning map prepared by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India has been divided into four zones namely Zone V, IV, III and II.

Among these areas, Zone 5 represents the highest seismic risk while Zone 2 represents the lowest seismic risk.

All the areas of Kashmir Valley and Doda district lie in seismic zone V, while the rest of the areas lie in seismic zone IV.

In 2005, a massive earthquake struck Jammu and Kashmir. The earthquake, measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, caused widespread devastation, especially in border villages, particularly in Baramulla (Uri) and Kupwara districts.
