An earthquake destroyed more than 100 buildings in Al-Ghani Governorate

The 5.1-magnitude earthquake destroyed more than 100 buildings, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Allegheny County, North Carolina – Sunday morning’s 5.1-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter near Sparta, North Carolina destroyed more than 100 buildings in Ghani County, but no injuries were reported, according to officials.

During an emergency meeting just hours after the earthquake, Ghanaian County Sheriff Brian Mainz said he had spoken with federal officials at the White House about the disaster.

“I was on the phone with the White House this morning. They assured me that they will help as much as possible. They expressed their interest in this morning’s decision to declare a state of emergency,” Sheriff Mainz said.

Sparta Mayor Wes Beringar signed the emergency declaration during the meeting.

Daniel Rutten, the emergency management coordinator for Ghani County, said only a few homes had been evacuated due to the scale of the damage.

The Al-Ghani County office building will be closed on Monday to assess and repair earthquake damage, according to Facebook late Sunday.

“We have some very important fundamental issues. Building cracks. Chimneys are falling or have already fallen,” Rotten said. “Car parks cracked, roads cracked, and main water broke around the city.”

WFMY News 2 spoke with Roten about what his team experienced in the aftermath of the earthquake.

“We have extensive minor damage with localized pockets of severe damage,” Rotten said. “It could have been a lot worse. Other than some shaky nerves, we did pretty well.”

Rutten said he had not heard of any injuries reported from the earthquake, but that it caused significant property damage.

He estimates that more than 100 buildings have been damaged in Allegheny County, but his team is still in the process of evaluation.

The most common damage he saw included cracking and diverting foundations of buildings, damage to rock walls, and damage to chimneys, Rotten said.

There were also main water breaks that needed to be repaired.

Rotten said Blue Ridge Energy suffered damage to a substation, but has since been repaired.
