The government calls on the population to remain calm after the earthquake that struck the Sines area.

The government today called on the population to remain calm and follow the recommendations of civil protection following the earthquake, which measured 5.3 on the Richter scale and had its epicentre 58 kilometres west of Sines.

The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere said the 5.3-magnitude quake struck at 05:11 with its epicenter 58 kilometers west of Sines in Setúbal province and has so far caused no human or material damage. It was followed by an aftershock of 1.2 magnitude at 05:47 at a depth of 20 kilometers, with the first quake occurring at a depth of 25 kilometers.

The government said in a statement that it is closely coordinating with all relevant services on this issue.

Information will be updated throughout the morning, especially by the IPMA and Civil Protection.

Following the meeting with Civil Protection, scheduled for 9:00 a.m., the President of the Republic will receive the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, in Belém.
