British Columbia Gets New Earthquake Alert System | Spare News
British Columbians will be able to receive up to 10 seconds of warning before an earthquake strikes, thanks to a new early warning system.
“By providing valuable seconds of warning, it will allow Canadians to take preventative action during an earthquake, including alerting people to ‘drop, cover and hold on,’” federal Energy and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said in an Aug. 29 news release.
These early warnings can give infrastructure operators time to take preventive measures such as stopping traffic from using bridges and tunnels, preventing planes from landing, stopping trains to prevent derailments, and opening fire station doors so emergency vehicles can respond more quickly to the aftermath of an earthquake, the announcement explains.
It will issue alerts to Canadians via cellphone, television and radio in the event of earthquakes of magnitude greater than 5, the range in which injuries or damage are most likely to occur, according to the federal government.
“British Columbia is more vulnerable to earthquakes than anywhere else in Canada, and it is important that we use the most advanced methods available to protect people across the province,” said Bowen Ma, BC Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Preparedness, in a news release.
Ma added that seismologists have been warning for decades that a major earthquake is due to hit the province in the coming decades – the so-called “big one” – and that the new system will give “critical seconds” of warning.
According to the province, several thousand earthquakes are recorded in British Columbia each year on average. People feel about 50 of these earthquakes annually, and earthquakes strong enough to cause structural damage occur about once every decade.
Earthquakes are also common along the St. Lawrence River Valley and the Ottawa River in eastern Ontario and southern Quebec. Wilkinson said the early warning system will begin operating in those areas later this year. The new system is part of the federal government’s $36 million plan to develop a warning system to protect earthquake-prone areas.
