No place for defectors in PTI, Imran promises

RAWALPINDI: Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan has announced a policy for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) defectors, saying there was no room for those who left the party during difficult times.

I want to make it clear that there is no place for those who abandoned the party during difficult times, the PTI founder said while addressing reporters at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Friday.

Refusing to name anyone, the founder of the embattled party said he knew who had abandoned the party in difficult times. Those who were active in good times but left the party in difficult times have no place in the party, he added.

However, the ousted prime minister said those who endured violence, which he said included torture of their families and blackmail in difficult times, but did not leave the party, have nothing to fear. The violent protests on May 9 saw attacks on state property, including military installations, by PTI militants. Earlier, the accountability court in Islamabad had adjourned the hearing of the 190 million pound case against former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi till September 4.

Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana heard the ₹190 million petition in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were produced before the court from the jail. Defence lawyers Zaheer Abbas and Usman Gill appeared before the court while, on behalf of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Attorney General Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi appeared before the court along with his team.

During the hearing, the defense lawyers questioned Umar Nadeem, the investigating officer in the 190 million pounds case, which could not be completed. Bushra Bibis' lawyer Usman Gil filed a contempt of court petition after the NAB failed to respond to the request for acquittal of Bushra Bibis in the 190 million pounds case.

In the petition, it was claimed that NAB had avoided answering questions in the last eight hearings and that contempt of court action should be initiated against NAB. Later, the court adjourned the hearing on the ₹190 million remand to September 4. In the next hearing, the lawyers will continue to cross-examine the investigating officer.
