Classes suspended in Camarines Norte after 5.3 magnitude quake

LEGAZPI CITY – Classes were suspended in all levels in public and private schools in Camarines Norte after a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Quezon province on Wednesday morning.

State Governor Ricardo Padilla said the suspension would allow authorities to more thoroughly assess and inspect school buildings and other infrastructure.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded the epicenter of the tectonic earthquake at 7:16 a.m., located 43 kilometers northeast of Jumalig, Quezon, at a depth of 1 kilometer.

Phivolcs recorded intensity III in Quezon City; intensity IV in Jose Panganiban in Camarines Norte; intensity III in Mauban, Guinayangan, Alabat, and General Nakar in Quezon Province; Dayet town in Camarines Norte, and Tinampak town in Camarines Sur.

The earthquake was felt at Intensity 2 epicenter in Dingalan, Aurora province; Gumaca, Lopez, Mulanay, and Caluag in Quezon province; Sagny, Pasacao, and Rajay in Camarines Sur; Los Baños in Laguna; Marikina City, and Tagaytay City.

Intensity I in Dolores and Lucban in Quezon; Calamba City in Laguna; Boac in Marinduque; Iriga City in Camarines Sur; Antipolo City and Tanay in Rizal; San Rafael and Marilao in Bulacan; Tabaco City in Albay, and the cities of Pasig and Caloocan.

By 9 a.m., the Volks Observatory had recorded 10 aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 1.5 to 4.9.

No damage was reported, but the Phivolcs institute said aftershocks could occur.
