A French woman who prosecutors say was raped by dozens of men while her drugged-up husband has told a court she is horrified to learn how she endured 10 years of abuse. Gisèle Pélicot, 72, was giving evidence in the trial against 51 men, including her 50-year-old husband, Dominique. All are accused of rape. Documents before the court show that Dominique Pélicot, 71, admitted to police that he got pleasure from watching other men have sex with his unconscious wife. Many of the defendants deny the rape allegations against them, arguing that they were taking part in consensual sex. But Gisèle Pélicot told the judge that she was “never complicit” in the sexual acts and did not pretend to be asleep. It is a case that has shocked France, as the details emerge during a public trial in the city of Avignon. Gisèle Pélicot waived her right to anonymity to bring “shame” on the accused, her legal team said. Taking the stand in court, she said she was speaking “for all the women who have been unknowingly drugged” so that no woman has to suffer.
