Muswellbrook Earthquake | Newcastle Weekly

An earthquake has left more than 2,500 homes without power in Muswellbrook, following similar shocks in recent weeks.

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of about 5 kilometers near the town just before 6 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, according to the Earthquake Research Center.

About 2,750 homes were without power as of 8 a.m., but Ausgrid said it had restored power to about 1,000 customers.

Hunter Valley Police officers have not been notified of any injuries or damage to infrastructure.

However, residents are advised to notify the relevant local authorities of any problems.

The event comes weeks after a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck the nearby town of Denman on August 23, the largest in the area in 50 years.

This was followed by a 4.5 magnitude earthquake in Muswellbrook the next day.

Dr Hadi Ghasemi, Senior Seismologist at Geoscience Australia.

At the time, Geoscience Australia's chief seismologist, Dr Hadi Ghasemi, told the Newcastle Weekly that he expected more quakes.

“I looked at the historical seismic activity of the area – over the past 20 years in a 100-kilometre radius of [23 August] “The event,” he said.

More than 150 cases were recorded during that period.

The 5.0-magnitude quake was the largest since a 4.4-magnitude quake struck the country in 2019.

Dr. Qasimi added that earthquakes often occur near mining sites, with a large number of them in the valley.

“It is not unusual for earthquakes to occur near this type of location,” he explained.

This is because the mines are located near fault lines, and fault lines provide a passage for fluids to pass through and deposit valuable minerals.

“However, the same process can actually increase the likelihood of earthquakes.”
