Watson and Whyte win singles titles at JTTA National Table Tennis Championships
Head coach of the Jamaica men's national football team, better known as the Reggae Boyz, Steve McClaren, praised the energy and enthusiasm of his team ahead of the 2024-25 CONCACAF Nations League season opener against Cuba at the National Stadium in Kingston on Friday.
McClaren, who until recently served as first-team coach at Manchester United, was brought in by Jamaica in July as a replacement for Heimir Hallgrimsson, who has since taken over as Ireland manager.
The 63-year-old former Newcastle United and FC Twente manager begins his tenure as manager of a Reggae Boyz team that finished third in the Nations League last season under Hallgrimsson, their best ever performance in the competition.
McClaren said at a pre-match press conference on Thursday that he is looking forward to it.
It's been a long time since I first came to Jamaica, he added.
McClaren spoke highly of his players and that is the energy and spirit he saw in the group ahead of Friday's game, which are important factors for a winning team.
“It was nice to come into camp, meet the players, stand on the grass and lose my voice from shouting. It was great. From the first day the players came in, there was a great energy and spirit among them. They showed that on the training pitch and we have to transfer what we have done this week to the pitch tomorrow to get a result against Cuba,” he said.
In preparation for his first match as manager of the Reggae Boyz on home soil, McClaren, despite his 23 years of experience as a manager, is feeling the tension that is common to anyone starting a new job in any profession.

“We can control the controllable, which is what we have tried to do. We just have to keep it simple. I am going to focus on the performance tomorrow. If we get the performance from the players, normally you get the win,” he added.
When asked what coaching style fans can expect from him, McClaren jokingly said he needs to be a winning coach, stressing that the focus needs to be on the basics and building on what has been done over the past two years.
I'm a pretty flexible, adaptable coach. I like the fundamentals. I like the basics. I like people to know their job and do it, work hard, have a good attitude and be hard to beat. I think that's the platform of all achievements, he said.
“If you are easy to beat, too tense and can't defend, you don't win football games. That's what the team has developed over the last two years and I like that. It gives us a platform. We have to build on that platform now,” he added.
