UK suspends all flights to Iran as allies tighten sanctions

Secretary Blinken echoed the E3 statement, saying the move “demonstrates that Iran's destabilizing influence extends far beyond the Middle East.”

The Western sanctions come as Russia continues to expand its influence in eastern Ukraine, with Moscow's military rapidly closing in on the key settlement of Pokrovsk.

Pokrovsk is a vital transport hub. If it falls, the Russians will cut off one of the main supply routes in the region. This will likely force Ukraine to retreat from Chasiv Yar and bring the front closer to the main industrial city of Kramatorsk.

Secretary Blinken said Iran's provision of shorter-range missiles would aid Russia's advance, adding that it would allow Moscow to use more of its existing arsenal against targets farther from the front lines, while the new missiles could be used against closer targets.

U.S. diplomats have criticized the new Iranian government led by President Masoud Pezekian, who is said to want less hostile relations with the West.

“Iran's new president and foreign minister have repeatedly said they want to restore relations with Europe. They want sanctions to be eased. These destabilizing measures will have the opposite effect,” he said.

Secretary Blinken and Secretary Ramey announced a joint visit to Ukraine this week, the first such visit in years, with British diplomats using the secretary’s visit to reaffirm the close partnership between the two countries, often described as the “special relationship.”

Secretary Blinken said ahead of the visit that one of their goals was to “hear directly from the Ukrainian leadership about their goals and what we can do to support those needs.”

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has made it clear that the British government will continue to support Ukraine and provide $3 billion in military assistance to Ukraine for as long as needed.

Last week, the British government announced it was sending hundreds of short-range missiles worth $162 million to Ukraine.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticized the pace of arms deliveries and has asked for permission to strike targets deep inside Russia with Western-supplied missiles, a move the United States has so far opposed.

Secretary Blinken did not say what response he would give to President Zelensky’s long-standing appeal at the Kiev meeting.
