The Illinois Department of Public Health is warning of an increase in congenital syphilis cases in the state.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (KWQC) – The Illinois Department of Public Health is warning about a growing problem with congenital syphilis in the state in a public service announcement issued on September 5th.

Congenital syphilis Syphilis is transmitted to the fetus during pregnancy. Nationwide, the number of syphilis-related stillbirths is increasing from 44 in 2016 to 231 in 2022, according to the IDPH.

Officials said the warning is meant to encourage pregnant women to get tested for the disease from their health care provider sooner.

“Syphilis is a serious infection that can be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy, and we are seeing a rapid increase in the number of babies infected with syphilis in Illinois,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra. “The good news is that testing and early detection can make a big difference and prevent serious disease. These public service announcements were created to encourage pregnant women to talk with their health care providers and get the testing and treatment they need to protect themselves and their babies.”

According to a recent article IndiaIn 2020, there were 29 cases of congenital syphilis in the state. In 2023, that number increased to 103 cases.

Rock Island County Health Department Director George Verastegui said there have been no confirmed cases recorded in six years. “We have not had a single confirmed case reported since 2018, but we did have one unconfirmed case in 2018, one in 2019 and one last year, all negative,” Verastegui said.

Verastegui said they have not had any cases yet, but they plan to open an STD clinic in December to address any needs.
