In his video message to the fourth Crimean Platform summit, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stressed that international law requires that Crimea be returned to Ukraine.
Expressing gratitude to all those who contributed to the organization of the Summit, in particular to President ZELENSKYI and Mustafa Krmolu, the national leader of the Crimean Tatar people, President Erdoğan reiterated that this year's Summit coincides with the 80th anniversary of the exile of the Crimean Tatar people.
“The suffering of our fellow Crimean Tatars, forcibly expelled from their homeland, has not subsided for 80 years and their wounds have not yet healed,” President Erdoğan said, before continuing: “The suffering has been exacerbated by the annexation of Crimea, which Turkey opposed from the very beginning and refused to recognize. Our support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine remains unwavering. International law requires that Crimea be returned to Ukraine.”
Stressing that ensuring the safety and well-being of our fellow Crimean Tatar Turks, who are part of the indigenous population of Crimea, remains a top priority of Turkish foreign policy, President Erdoğan said: “I would like to express my gratitude for the legal provisions that the Ukrainian government has put in place to strengthen the rights of the Crimean Tatar Turks. I believe that further steps will continue to be taken in the coming period to consolidate the rights of the Crimean Tatar Turks.”
Noting that Crimean Tatar Turks have the right to live a free, safe and peaceful life in their homeland, President Erdoğan said:
“We are pleased that Nariman Celal, deputy chairman of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, was released in June after almost three years of captivity. We hope that all our fellow Crimean Tatars, including brothers Asan and Aziz Akhmetov, will be released as soon as possible.
“We sincerely aspire to end the war with a just and lasting peace, based on the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine. Concluding my speech, I hope that our efforts within this platform will contribute to international efforts aimed at establishing peace in Crimea, Ukraine and the region. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of their exile, I once again pay tribute to the precious memories of our Crimean Tatar Turkic relatives, who have passed into eternity.”
